Funeral of Ms Su Spencer FACS, 12 August 2011 Florey Chapel Centennial Park

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) today paid tribute to one of its distinguished members, ACS Fellow Ms Su Spencer, who passed away on Friday, August 5, 2011. A member of the ACS since late 1993, Su held numerous key roles within the ACS including ACS Disciplinary Committee Member (2006 - 2007), ACS Women Board Director (2005 - 2006), Branch Chair of ACS Tasmania (2000 - 2001), SA Branch Vice Chair (2004 - 2005) and SA Branch Executive Committee Member (2003/04 and 2006/07). Su was the principle designer and developer of a software package that won the First Australian Design Award for Software. She strongly influenced government policy in South Australia and Tasmania, especially in the introduction of portals, e-Commerce and e-Services and the continuing development of ICT infrastructure for societal change and access. "We are deeply saddened to have lost an ICT professional and a committed member who contributed so much of her time to the ACS and the ICT profession. Su will be greatly missed," said ACS SA Chairman, Mr Jack Burton.
Su Spencer was farewelled today at Centennial Park.  Her husband 'Murph', her two sons Neil, Stuart and his wife Karen, and grandson Alex were well supported by a large gathering of friends, colleagues from Cycling Australia, the University of SA and the ACS.  There was lots of AV support for photos of her life and with well chosen songs from Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller culminating with "The Bicycle Song" from The Mixtures. Murph wrote a fitting eulogy, read by the Celebrant, and Stuart read his own moving tribute to Su.  Neil chose a poem in honour of his mother.  The life of Su might well be summed up for those who knew her in the words from I'm Free by Shannon Lee Moseley: My life's been full, I savored much; Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch. Perhaps my time seems all to brief; ... and yes Su, it has been.  RIP. Brenda Aynsley FACS, Honorary Life Member funeral su spencer4
